High-Risk Pool Offers Insurance For Those Previously Denied

Ohioans previously closed out of the private individual health insurance market due to their medical history now have a new option: the Ohio High-Risk Pool.

“This could help thousands of Ohioans whose health status has had them denied coverage in the past,” said Ron Bridges, a government relations and advocacy staff member with AARP Ohio. “Our members repeatedly told lawmakers that no one should be denied coverage due to pre-existing medical conditions, and this is a good step in the right direction.”

According to the , the high-risk pool makes coverage more affordable for individuals whose pre-existing conditions or health status prevented them from buying coverage in the private market. Some 300+ Ohioans who for at least six months did not have health insurance due to pre-existing conditions were covered on Sept. 1, 2010, the first day that high-risk pool insurance took effect in the Buckeye state.

Medical Mutual of Ohio won the contract in competitive bidding to operate the state’s high-risk pool. In its proposal, Medical Mutual estimated that it expects to cover up to 5,500 individuals, paying a standard rate premium for their coverage, with the $152 million in federal funds that the program will receive through 2014.
