AARP Member Opinion Research

This and Related Reports

This survey of 983 AARP members in Delaware investigated their experiences and opinions related to long-term care. Some of the key findings are as follows: Although 7 in 10 Delaware members who need long-term care receive that care in a nursing home, only about 5% would choose this option for themselves or a family member.

The first choice of 6 in 10 members for themselves or a family member is to receive care at home with the help of a health care professional.

Nearly 9 in 10 of the members think it is very or somewhat important for Delaware to make home and community services more widely available, even if it would require an increase in state taxes.

More than half of them do not know how they would pay for long-term care services should the need arise.

Over 9 in 10 Delaware members believe strengthening regulations for nursing homes should be a top or high legislative priority for AARP. The survey was conducted in November and December 2003. David Cicero and Katherine Bridges managed the project. David Cicero analyzed the data and prepared the report. For more information, contact Katherine Bridges at (202)434-6329.
