Reforming the Health Care System State Profiles 2001 Excerpts

Nearly 100 commonly used indicators are presented to assess the nation's health care system, with profiles, data, trends, and rankings for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. National statistics are also provided in this AARP Public Policy Institute data book by Susan Raetzman, Lauren Craig, and Cathy McDougall. Information for individual states is presented in 10 different categories: Demographics; Health Status; Resources Available; Utilization of Services; Health Coverage and the Uninsured; Medicare; Medicaid and State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP); Managed Care; Expenditures and Financing, and Key Trends. The section "key trends," a new feature of this year's edition, shows changes over time (usually 10 years) in both population and environmental characteristics that affect a state and in health system features that are influenced by policies and practices within a state. Additional sections include maps of various health reforms, comparative state rankings for each indicator, and a data documentation section. While the most current data available were used to compile the chartbook, the sources of and years for the data vary from indicator to indicator. Please note: The online edition of Reforming the Health Care System consists of the following excerpts from the complete 288-page report which may be obtained by contacting Janett Gasaway at 202-434-3890 or the Public Policy Institute at (printed copies of the Highlights are also available).
