We’ve all heard the prescription for a longer life: eat healthy food, exercise and don’t smoke. But, as Dr. Robert Butler explains there’s actually more to it than that. Butler, recognized as one of the preeminent authorities on aging, says having a purpose or goal is critical to longevity. Another key is having close personal relationships with others. Butler is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and heads the Longevity Center in New York. He’s founded several groups related to aging including the American Federation for Aging Research and the Alzheimer’s Disease Association. Editor’s Note: Dr. Butler died of cancer on July 4, 2010, at the age of 83. Cancel You are leaving AARP.org and going to the website of our trusted provider.
