In Connecticut, only 34% of eligible older adults receive food assistance—leaving millions of dollars in federal aid untouched. The most common reason people do not receive assistance is that they don’t realize they may be eligible.
If you or someone you know is living on a fixed income and could use help making ends meet each month, they may qualify for SNAP, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP currently provides benefits to over 350,000 Connecticut residents and the average monthly benefit for seniors is about $134. There is no asset limit to qualify for SNAP and once enrolled, benefits are automatically loaded on a debit-style card which is accepted at most grocery stores.
