But the onset of colder temperatures also brings considerable worry for many, making today a good day to think about winter heating bills, how to reduce those costs and how to pay the bill when it does arrive.
LIEAP (pronounced lee-ap) helps thousands of Wyomingites just like you pay monthly home heating bills. To get help with natural gas, propane or wood heating bills, apply before Feb. 28.
You could qualify if your gross monthly income is $1,893 or less and you have a household size of one or your household includes two people and your gross monthly income is $2,475 or less. (See more program information and income guidelines at the Web site.)
To get an application, call 800-246-4221 and ask that one be mailed to you. You can visit the Wyoming Department of Family Services online or ask at your local senior center for an application.
To finish the application, you’ll need clear photocopies of identification, such as Social Security card, driver’s license or birth certificate for every person in your household; proof of income, such as bank statements for Social Security deposits or paycheck stubs; and a current utility bill to complete the application. Every application packet includes complete instructions.
Looking for help keeping your home warmer and seeing smaller home heating bills? A program called Weatherization Assistance Program can help. When you apply for LIEAP, you can choose to take part in this program, too. A crew of energy-saving experts helps decide where heat loss is happening in your home and then helps you determine how you can use less energy to heat your home. It doesn’t matter if you own or rent your home. Just be sure to check the “yes” box next to the question “Are you interested in a program to help you conserve energy in your home?”
Does it make sense to apply for the program when winter hasn’t shown its worst yet? Absolutely! While LIEAP benefits help pay bills through May, once approved, LIEAP is retroactive to Oct. 15.
