In Mississippi, about 200 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers served 14,500 people in 2011, according to Larry Grant, AARP Tax-Aide Coordinator for Mississippi. AARP Tax Aide has 35 sites throughout the state.
Through a team of trained volunteers, AARP Tax-Aide has helped people for more than 40 years in every state and the District of Columbia. Volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS, which has a cooperative agreement with the AARP Foundation to run the program.
“Our service not only saves people money that they could use to pay for heating bills or food, it also saves them a meaningful amount of money that they may have paid another service to have their taxes done,” Grant said.
AARP Tax-Aide has been helping taxpayers since 1968 at sites located in convenient places such as libraries, malls, banks, and senior centers. Nationwide, more than 35,000 Tax-Aide volunteers help nearly 3 million people across the country with their tax questions and returns, making sure they receive all of their eligible deductions.
“We provide a very helpful service to people who are just bewildered by the (tax) process,” Grant said.
