The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide was founded in 1968 by four AARP volunteers. Today, more than 35,000 volunteers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia serve at 6,100+ Tax-Aide sites from Feb. 1 to April 15.
According to Lynn Boulware, AARP Missouri Tax-Aide state coordinator, some Missouri volunteers have participated in the program over 25 years.
“In addition to saving taxpayers the cost of having returns prepared, in Missouri we assisted the taxpayers in receiving more than $23 million in refunds this year,” said Boulware. “Fifteen percent of those served qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a Federal credit for low to moderate income working individuals and families.”
In 2011, volunteers from across the nation helped 2.6 million people navigate complicated tax codes, ensure proper credits and deductions and file their federal income taxes. Taxpayers who used AARP Foundation Tax-Aide received $1.3 billion in income tax refunds and more than $228 million in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITCs).
Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree to participate. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers receive free tax training and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses. They help taxpayers at sites around the state, learning new skills while giving back to countless communities.
