Report Home Despite the common belief that middle-aged and older Americans are financially secure during this time of economic downturn, the reality is much harsher. This snapshot of AARP’s 2008 economic research provides information resources and highlights a list of concerns, including the following: During the last 6 months of 2007, more than 1 of every 4 foreclosures and delinquencies involved Americans aged 50 and older. Between 1991 and 2007, the sharpest increase in bankruptcy filings was among people aged 55 and older. Dreams of easing back to enjoy life have faded as the downturn worsens, with older workers delaying retirement, increasing the number of hours they work, and curtailing retirement saving. Nearly 1 in 5 people aged 45 and older are worried that they will not be able to afford medical care in 2009, and many have cut back on energy use.
