Utility Issues in Illinois A Survey of Residents 18 in the Prairie State

Report Home Illinois utility issues are addressed in this recent AARP survey eliciting opinions of Illinois residents on cellular phone service, telecommunications, and electric service. Specific utility issues explored include consumer protections on cell phone contracts, electric utility rates, and phone company sales practices. Of those surveyed... 78 percent oppose allowing phone companies to try to sell consumers additional services when consumers are calling to report a problem with their phone service. 87 percent support the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) requiring phone companies to disclose the terms and conditions of their telephone service. 64 percent prefer having stable electrical rates that do not change for at least 12 months, even if this results in higher rates. 85 percent support a law that gives consumers the right to terminate their cell phone service up to 20 days after receiving their first bill, even if the customer would still be responsible for the first billing charges. 70 percent have a cell phone. This telephone survey of 1,006 Illinois residents 18 years of age or older was conducted for AARP from Nov. 30 - Dec. 8, 2004 by Woelfel Research, Inc.
