Report Home The commissioned a nationwide survey in August 2008 to find out how consumers age 18+ feel about home energy costs and how they plan to reduce costs this winter. Those who believe the country is facing an energy shortage were asked how the issue should be addressed. The survey findings indicate that almost one-quarter of respondents (22%) are not confident about being able to afford their home energy costs this winter. In addition, almost two-thirds believe that the country is facing an energy shortage. Key findings include the following: To help reduce energy costs this winter, 94% of respondents plan to turn off lights when not using a room, 68% will lower the temperature setting on their thermostats, 64% plan to wear more clothing indoors, and 43% plan to weatherproof their homes. 63% of respondents age 18-49 and 67% of those age 50 and older believe the country is facing an energy shortage. Almost nine in ten respondents (86%) believe that increased energy conservation would help ease the shortage. Other solutions endorsed by a majority of respondents include increased use of solar power (92%), wind power (82%), water power (79%), nuclear power (67%), and offshore oil drilling (60%). The study was conducted for AARP via telephone by International Communications Research (ICR) using its national omnibus survey service. The interviews were conducted from August 27 to August 31, 2008, among a nationally representative sample of 1,007 respondents ages 18 and older.
