Early detection is often the key to treating age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in folks age 65 and older. And now, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is making that easier—with free eye exams. To qualify for the new program, provided by 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists across the country, you need to be at least age 65 and a legal U.S. resident, not belong to an HMO or the VA, and not have seen an ophthalmologist in three years or longer. For more information, call 1-866-324-3937 toll-free or go online to a program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. This new campaign began Sept. 18 and follows a similar AAO program that provides. That initiative is open to U.S. residents who have a higher risk because of age, race or family history, who don’t belong to an HMO or the VA, and who haven’t had a vision exam in one year or longer. For information on glaucoma screenings, call 1-800-391-3937. Cancel You are leaving AARP.org and going to the website of our trusted provider. The provider’s terms, conditions and policies apply.
