Monica J Lindeen to Headline Free Consumer Fraud Presentations

AARP Montana and Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica J. Lindeen are teaming up to offer a series of consumer fraud presentations throughout southeast Montana in late May. The “How to Smell a Rat” presentations will explore consumer protection issues and will show people how the spot the telltale signs of fraud. The presentations are free and open to the public and include a free meal, however, an RSVP is kindly requested due to limited space. “Our fight against fraud never stops,” said Lindeen. “We know the best kind of law enforcement is ensuring the crime does not find the victim in the first place -- which is why we are constantly working to educate Montanans about investment pitfalls. Many investment schemes are easy to avoid -- a little knowledge goes a long way. The insight folks will gain from these presentations will help them to recognize and resist the persuasion tactics used by fraud criminals.” Topics covered during the presentations include investment fraud, fake insurance, ponzi schemes, pyramid schemes, identity theft, internet scams, health care fraud and telemarketing fraud. People will learn how to spot these schemes and scams, learn techniques to avoid them and what to do if they suspect fraud. “The truth is, regardless of age, circumstance or income, people at some point in their lives are bound to hear from a fraudster,” said Bob Bartholomew, AARP Montana State Director. “Investment fraud criminals are masters of persuasion. They are professionals -- this is what they do 24/7. And the tactics they use to try and separate you from your money are increasingly sophisticated. The main thing to realize is you’re not alone. Knowledge is power. And when you’re armed with the right information, you keep the control in your hands.” Lindeen will offer the presentations May 24 – 28 in Glendive, Ekalaka, Miles City, Hysham, Colstrip, Hardin, Red Lodge and Big Timber. To reserve a space call toll-free 1-800-332-6148 or . “These presentations by Monica Lindeen are an excellent opportunity for people to learn more about investment fraud and to have their questions answered by the state’s top securities and insurance regulator,” said Bartholomew. “I encourage everyone interested in protecting themselves from financial fraud to attend.” Quick Glance Details Who: Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica J.
