Tech-Support Scam Victims to Share $10 2 Million Refund

A company that made false sales claims will compensate consumers

Matej Moderc/Getty Images The scammers used high-pressure sales tactics while falsely claiming to find viruses and malware on victims’ computers. The Federal Trade Commission announced on Monday it will begin mailing 36,830 checks totaling $10,158,601 to consumers who were victimized by a high-pressure that made false claims. Inbound Call Experts, LLC, doing business as Advanced Tech Support, and other defendants, agreed to pay the money as part of a settlement with the FTC. The company and other defendants are accused of using high-pressure sales pitches to market products and services while falsely claiming to find viruses and malware on victims’ computers. The average refund is $277. The agency advised recipients to deposit or cash the checks within 60 days. Questions should go to the FTC at 1-877-793-0908. The defendants who operated the Florida-based tech-support scheme allegedly deceived thousands of consumers. A court order blocks the accused from misrepresenting that they have spotted performance or security problems on consumer computers. A court-appointed monitor will oversee the company for two years at the defendants’ expense, the FTC said. The court order also requires the defendants to review the of those they’ve worked with to generate leads. The stipulated order announced on Monday resolved the case. Defendants include Advanced Tech Supportco LLC; PC Vitalware LLC; Super PC Support LLC; Robert D. Deignan, Paul M. Herdsman and Justin M. Wright.
