Experience Corps Bay Area (Oakland/Berkeley) Experience Corps
The Experience Corps model is a proven intervention with measurable benefits for students, as well as positive mental and physical health benefits for volunteers who participate. By helping young students become better readers, Experience Corps seeks to ensure a lasting legacy of strong futures, supported schools and empowered volunteers.
Program Launch 2013 (Berkeley) Program Impact (2016-2017 school year)
Students served: 3,534 Volunteers: 204 Hours of tutoring: 16,713 Classrooms served: 231 92 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year improved their reading and literacy performance by half a grade level or more 95 percent of volunteer tutors reported that they were satisfied with the academic progress they made with students

Experience Corps Bay Area received the 2012 Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence for its efforts to bring about positive, lasting changes in local communities. In 2013, ECBA was named Organizational Partner of the Year by the Oakland Unified School District. In 2014, ECBA volunteers in the East Bay were presented with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for their work providing mentorship and tutoring. With further expansion in Berkeley and in Oakland, ECBA will be providing literacy intervention to children in 11 Alameda County schools in 2014-15. Experience Corps Bay Area is a proud sub-grantee of the SIF program under a grant provided from the Corporation for National and Community Service to AARP Foundation.

Experience Corps Bay Area is a proud AmeriCorps program. AARP Foundation Experience Corps is an intergenerational volunteer-based tutoring program that is proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become great readers by the end of third grade.
