Pros

Legitimately great deals of the day Shopping experience is fun and not overwhelming Strong community vibe

Cons

Limited product selection Deals vanish when products go out of stock May have to dig to find what you want I do a great deal of my shopping online, and I also have a side business that involves finding deals on online shopping sites and reselling. I’ve had a look at a multitude of daily deals and group buying sites out there, and frankly, I have not been impressed with very many of them. They all have a variety of drawbacks, whether it be the products they offer, their prices, their shipping times, or their return policies. In general, I’ve learned that you need to be very careful when shopping at these websites, to make sure you are actually getting a “deal.” However, there is one “deal of the day” site that I feel is head and shoulders above the rest. That website is called Woot! (I’ll drop the exclamation point in the rest of this review, but rest assured that’s part of the official name.) I’ve been a Woot customer for several years now and have never been disappointed with any of my purchases. And now that Woot is part of the Amazon family, it has even more money-saving potential. If you love getting great deals on everyday products — and some weird stuff too — Woot is made for you.

How Woot Stacks Up

Woot survived the “deal of the day” shakeout that felled many of its competitors in the 2010s. But it doesn’t have the space to itself, and new discounting models have cropped up in the meantime. Let’s see how Woot compares to another “daily deal” contemporary that’s still going strong: Groupon. How Woot Works — Key Features of Woot

Woot looks and feels a lot like the main Amazon.com site. But it doesn’t have as many products for sale — we’re talking hundreds instead of hundreds of thousands — and the products that it does sell are all heavily discounted. You can think of Woot as a sort of digital clearance bin. It got its start as a standard “deal of the day” site, but it’s a bit more complicated (and rewarding) nowadays. There’s a significant social component to Woot too, one absent from the main Amazon.com site. Let’s take a look at what you can buy on Woot and all the different ways to save here.

What Can You Buy on Woot

What can’t you buy on Woot? Woot’s retail categories include: Home and kitchenElectronicsComputersTools and gardenSports and outdoorsShirt — yes, singular, and low-key one of the best places to find silly screen-printed T-shirts onlineGrocery and householdClearance — subdivided into items under $5, $10, $20, $50, and so on A note about the Grocery section: It’s mostly or entirely nonperishable items, so if you’re looking for fresh stuff from an Amazon-affiliated vendor, look to Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market.

Woot Deal of the Day

Woot still does run a “deal of the day” promotion featuring a different deeply discounted product every day. The item is “released” at midnight and stays available until either 11:59 PM that day, or until it sells out, whichever comes first. The “deal of the day” is usually something quite valuable, and the discount is usually quite attractive. Here, we have a refurbished iPad Pro selling for a couple hundred bucks less than you’d get on eBay. The “deal of the day” usually features a snappy product description, a few high-res images, and (of course) a link to buy the product. There’s also a link to a Woot forum thread about the product. As we’ll see, Woot is big on forum threads, both on-topic and (sometimes) way off.

Daily Deals

Woot’s Daily Deals are distinct from the “deal of the day.” There are more of them — often several dozen — and they don’t actually last for just one day. Most Daily Deals last a week or longer, or until stock runs out. The “until stock runs out” thing is a recurring theme of Woot, for better or worse. Woot Daily Deals aren’t as heavily discounted as the “deal of the day.” But the discounts are still quite impressive, and pricing is transparent — you can see how much you’re saving over list price on Amazon. In the example below, you can see that Woot knocks anywhere from 15% to 67% off list price for various Cuisinart cookware sets, depending on style and quantity.

Best Sellers

Right below the Daily Deals section of Woot’s homepage live Woot’s Best Sellers. You’ll have to take Woot’s word for it that these are indeed best-selling products, but in the end it doesn’t really matter. They span Woot’s entire product catalog, from headphones to QLED TVs to odds-and-ends like counter tickers. (Good news for proprietors of grab-and-go restaurants.) Woot’s Best Sellers boast discounts on par with Woot’s Daily Deals. Many but not all show the discount to list price. Others are just clearly priced to sell. Deadlines tend to be less urgent in the Best Sellers department. Month-long deals are common, though again, there’s always the risk of a stockout. If you see something you like, don’t wait.

Last Chance

Woot’s Last Chance deals really are about to disappear forever. Or at least until they come back in stock. All Last Chance deals expire at 11:59 PM tonight. They’ve been around for a while and have made it this far while still in stock, so you have one last shot to score them. They span the full range of Woot’s lineup, from high-end electronics to knickknacks Woot politely describes as “serious crap.”

New Today

Woot’s New Today deals are just that: Products appearing on Woot for the first time today, or at least the first time in a while. It’s unclear if previously out-of-stock items count as New Today when they return. By now, you know the drill. Like other Woot items, New Today products are deeply discounted and time-limited. Because they’re new, the deadlines seem more relaxed — two to four weeks is common. New Today items feel less curated than other Woot categories. That might be because there are fewer new items on any given day, and seeing all the different types of products together gives off an eclectic vibe. Not that that’s a bad thing. If you happen to need a coffee mug, a spark plug, and a structural hanger and screw set, you can knock out your entire shopping list without navigating away from the page.

Woot Forums

Woot has dozens, maybe hundreds, of chat forums for users. All you need to participate is a Woot login. By the numbers, most Woot forums are about specific Woot deals. But many if not most of those are basically deserted. In the screenshot above, most have no comments. The real action is in “extracurricular” forums covering topics not directly related to Woot, like professional sports and streaming shows. Here, Woot’s true popularity shines through, and it’s clear that the platform has thousands of super-users who legitimately enjoy being part of the community. So if you enjoy shooting the breeze almost as much as scoring can’t-miss deals, spare a few moments for Woot’s forums.

Woot Monkeys

No, I don’t know what the deal is with Woot’s screaming monkey mascots. Maybe Woot doesn’t either anymore. Regardless, they’re cute, silly, and impossible to miss. And you can buy little Woot screaming monkey dolls — keychain-size stuffies that emit decently loud screams when you squeeze them. A nice gift for the (mature) kid in your life, maybe?

Woot Shipping & Return Policy

Amazon Prime members always get free standard shipping on Woot products. The only exception is for products that require a specialty carrier to ship — usually really big, bulky, fragile, or hazardous items. If you don’t have an Amazon Prime membership, you’ll need to pay a variable shipping charge that depends on the item size, delivery timetable, your location, and possibly other factors. Expedited shipping costs more; you can get discounted expedited shipping (and possibly no charge at all) as an Amazon Prime member. Most Woot items can be returned within 30 days for a full refund. The refund process is self-serve: You initiate it in your account, print out a return label, and send it back. There are some standard exclusions to Woot’s refund policy. Returns of apparel, hazardous items, items with lithium batteries, anything perishable, and Woot’s “bags of crap” (clearance items) are all restricted or prohibited. You can cancel any order (except final-sale clearance items) within two hours if you no longer want it.

Advantages of Woot

Woot has some clear advantages that make it a go-to deals site for anyone serious about saving money. (Which is pretty much everyone.) Major selling points include legitimately great pricing, a fun and not-overwhelming shopping experience, offbeat product narratives, and a strong community vibe. Pricing. Woot advertises that it sells products for “dirt cheap,” and it lives up this claim. You can find other sites like this that claim that their prices are lower than anywhere else, only to find with a simple Internet search that their prices really aren’t deals at all. With Woot, I can assure you that the majority of the time, its prices are in fact among the lowest on the Internet.Product Descriptions and Narratives. One thing I absolutely love about Woot is how they describe the products. They do it in a very off-the-cuff, politically incorrect fashion – a lot of the narratives are downright funny. You usually get a little “story” mixed in with the product details and if the product isn’t of the greatest quality in their estimation, they’ll usually tell you that, too.Honesty About Refurbs. On many other “deal of the day” sites, the products they offer are refurbished or re-certified, and they don’t make that immediately clear. On Woot, if it’s a refurb, they tell you that upfront and in no uncertain terms.Woot Off. I haven’t mentioned it yet because it’s not as big a part of the Woot experience as in the past, but “Woot Off” mode is awesome. It’s basically a flash sale featuring multiple “deals of the day” in quick succession — no need to wait until the next day to get the next deal. I’ve found that the prices that they offer on Woot Off days are even lower than the already low daily prices, but don’t take my word for it.Manageable Number of Products. Woot has a manageable number of products without the infinite variation (and knockoffs) of the main Amazon.com site. That makes for a fun, not-overwhelming shopping experience.Strong Community Vibe. Woot’s community forums feel like a throwback to the early days of the Internet, but they remain a core part of the Woot experience. It’s nice to be able to bounce ideas off fellow deal-hunters, if nothing else.

Disadvantages of Woot

Woot does have some downsides, including limited product selection, short-term deals, and uneven curation that may result in you having to dig for the exact item you’re looking for. Selection Pales in Comparison to Amazon. This is to be expected, but it’s still worth noting. You might not find anything you actually want or need on Woot, at least not right now.Deals Don’t Last Forever. Again, perhaps this is to be expected from a site that got its start as a “deal of the day” curator. But Woot has expanded its offerings in the years since, and one might expect a more stable product lineup by now. Uneven Curation. Woot is sort of like a digital bargain bin, or clearance rack, or whatever metaphor you prefer. There’s nothing wrong with this per se, but it does mean you have to work to find what you’re looking for here. Notably, Woot doesn’t have an onsite search feature, and as you can see below, it’s some work to sort through thousands of in-stock products. No Browser Extension. Woot offers onsite deals only. Unlike some competitors, it doesn’t offer a browser extension that lets you comparison-shop — and potentially get cash back — elsewhere on the Web.

Is Woot Legit

It’s a fair question, but the short answer is yes — Woot is legit. Woot has several features that should inspire confidence in potential users: First and probably most important, it’s owned by Amazon — it’s not some fly-by-night online retailer that’s going to steal your moneyWoot has an impressive record of positive customer reviews, although you’ll find some complaints tooWoot offers legitimately great deals on featured productsWoot is easy to use and less overwhelming than the main Amazon siteWoot has a great selection, despite its ease of use and uncluttered interface Bottom line: You should give Woot a try. If you’re not impressed, that’s fine — you don’t have to keep coming back.

Final Word

I have a lot of experience shopping on the Internet and I have purchased a great deal of items from Woot. I have never had a problem with anything I’ve ever purchased there — and I’ve had great fun doing said purchasing. Among the highlights: Woot’s descriptions and narratives are informative and entertaining, and the checkout process couldn’t be any easier. Bottom line: I would highly recommend adding Woot to your favorites list, because you never know what you’re going to find. And you know that it’s going to be at a great price.
