Simple Ways to Save Money on Your Electric Bill

Over the past several years, my wife and I have been on a mission to live frugally, reduce our debt load, and rebuild our net worth. This follows a downturn in the real estate market as well as massive medial bills due to a health crisis that my wife suffered. In a effort to save on electricity, I have been known to go on an “LED patrol” where I look for any LED (the lights that indicate that a device is on) and shut it down. For example, we rarely use our fax machine, so we usually keep it turned off. Even the computer printer is only used a fraction of the time that the computer is on so I often power it off. I am also known for keeping lights off and following my wife and turn off lights behind her. Sometimes, I mistakenly turn them off while she is in the bathroom because it’s such a habit (and she thinks I am doing it to be funny). I do have to credit my wife with helping us save money by opening the windows which helps keep the A/C off as much as possible. I have to say, I enjoy fresh air flowing through our home a bit more than the A/C.
Recently while I was talking to our utility company, I was discussing how to lower our electric bills and they actually had some decent advice. A few recommendations they had were: Use a power strip to power down multiple computer devices at once. Of course, make sure there is nothing with a clock that needs to be reset on the power strip.Use energy efficient lights such as Light Emitting Diode (LED) or Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL’s). You can check with your power company because our often gives them out from the office (we missed that promo).Check the temperature on the hot water heater. You really don’t need it much hotter than 120 degrees, but I found ours set at 140 degrees. I hope these offer you some ideas and help you save money on your electric bill. If you have any tips on saving on electricity, feel free to leave them in the comments below for others. We have found that it’s all of the little things that add up to big savings; and you can take that to the bank – literally! Of course, if you live in Arizona as we do, you could always go with solar and get off the grid. :-) Save Money Manage Money Home Improvement Family & Home TwitterFacebookPinterestLinkedInEmail
