10 Ideas to Save on Cheap Wedding Jewelry & Rings for Brides

Jewelry may not seem like one of the bigger details of wedding planning. For the bride, her wedding dress, hair style, and makeup all usually take precedence over jewelry. Still, the bride must wear some jewelry on her big day, and even more crucial are the wedding bands that the bride and groom exchange. When all is said and done, what you are left with after the wedding are two people with rings on their fingers. So wedding jewelry plays an important part, but it’s an area where you can save some money too. Here are ten ways to save on wedding jewelry.

Save Money on Wedding Jewelry for the Bride

1. Don’t Even Bother Going into an Expensive Store
This is the number one way to save money on wedding jewelry. If you don’t let yourself go into the more expensive shops, then you’ll be less tempted to go beyond your budget. Unfortunately, I am speaking from experience. While shopping for my wedding, I found myself in Swarovski Crystal, and I walked out with a bill over $500. Had I never gone in there, I believe I would not have spent nearly that much.

Shop with a Frugal Friend Choose your shopping buddies carefully. You probably have some friends who are big spenders – avoid them when jewelry-hunting. Instead, ask those who are frugal and know how to find good deals. Make sure that your shopping partners are aware of your budget and will encourage you to stick to it. 3. Ask for Jewelry as a Gift If your future spouse or in-laws, or maybe your parents, are planning to buy you a bridal gift, you might suggest jewelry that you’ll wear during the wedding. Jewelry is a nice “something new” for a bride. Just make sure it is jewelry that you can see yourself wearing again in the future. 4. Get Something Borrowed
As with wedding dresses, why buy jewelry that you may only wear once? Skip anything that’s so fancy you won’t wear it again unless you happen upon an invitation to the Oscars or an inaugural ball. Instead, consider borrowing your mother’s pearls or your aunt’s diamond earrings, especially if they wore them at their weddings. Sentimental value counts. 5. Make Your Own
I have several friends who make their own jewelry using jewelry-making kits or from items that they pick up at stores. Making your own jewelry will also give you the freedom to design it exactly how you want it. If you don’t think you have the skill set to assemble your own necklace and bracelet, ask a crafty friend to help or buy handmade jewelry on Etsy. 6. Shop Online You can get some amazing discounts by shopping online. When I was getting married, I bought my sister a beautiful diamond infinity circle necklace as a maid-of-honor gift on Overstock.com for a fraction of the original cost. The drawback is that it can be tricky to judge jewelry on a computer screen, especially as far as the actual dimensions of the items. Make sure there is a good return policy in case you’re not satisfied. 7. Don’t Overdo It
Depending on your wedding dress and your wedding hairstyle, it may be unnecessary to wear much jewelry at all. For instance, the cut of your dress may not show much of your neckline. Or perhaps your hair will hide your ears – and earrings. Or if your veil is heavily beaded, you should stick with simple jewelry to avoid drawing attention away from the beauty of your veil and dress.

Save Money on Wedding Rings

8. Go for Cheaper Materials
Platinum is usually very expensive, especially since it is as strong as it is strikingly beautiful. However, can you really tell the difference between platinum and white gold? To save even more money, consider tungsten carbide and titanium. My husband’s wedding band is made out of titanium and only cost $29. Although it can scratch easily, it is a very light material, which may be preferred by some people. Tungsten carbide is a little more expensive but feels heavier and does not scratch the way titanium does. 9. Learn about Diamonds If you decide that you want diamonds on your wedding band, educate yourself before you go shopping. Learn about how to buy a diamond engagement ring – including the four C’s (carat, cut, clarity, and color). 10. Don’t Assume the Matching Set Is Best
Some engagement rings have a matching wedding band to go with them. If you think this is what you want, first consider finding an alternative band that is similar to the matching band. By going with an alternative, I was able to save hundreds of dollars.

Final Word

When it comes to weddings, jewelry is an area where you can really save as long as you shop wisely by staying out of the priciest stores. Don’t put yourself in a situation where you will be tempted to break your budget. How did you save money on wedding jewelry and wedding bands?
