When Maris hit his 61st home run of the 1961 season, he set the all-time MLB record. Although Judge is on pace to break the American League record, Barry Bonds' all-time record of 73 may be out of reach. This could explain why New York is downplaying Judge's chase for 61. Another reason could be that the playoffs are coming up in just a couple of weeks. Although the Yankees did win the World Series the year Maris broke the record, there were no playoffs then. The teams with the best record in each league would always face each other in the World Series until 1969. Regardless, Aaron Judge is on the brink of doing something special. He is also having one of the best offensive seasons we've seen in quite some time.
