YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Celebrity Footballers Wives is officially being made into a musical By You Magazine - October 22, 2019 Footballers Wives was one of the best things to come out of British TV in the noughties. Our obsession with WAGs (the wives and girlfriends of footballers) combined with the dramatisation of their crazy lifestyles, relationships and constant tension was simply a genius plot for TV. And judging by the recent real-life feud between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy, it’s clear that we still can’t get enough of them. Alamy Stock Photos Hilariously dubbed ‘Wagatha Christie’, the tedious social media drama between Rooney and Vardy has not only led to endless memes and become the subject of many group chats, it appears that it has actually inspired a reboot of Footballers Wives. And this time, it will be hitting theatre stages. That’s right, Footballers Wives The Musical has been confirmed as in the works, and we could not be more excited. Alamy Stock Photos The news of the musical was announced by screenwriter Maureen Chadwick, who revealed that the fictional series would be adapted into a stage production, focusing on the first season of the show, which ran for five seasons airing from 2003 to 2006. Speaking to Radio Times, Chadwick, who was a co-creator on the original series, revealed that the musical will be hitting theatres in 2020. However, don’t expect to see the original cast in the production. Instead, the makers are currently preparing for their hunt for new talent to star in the show which will kick off at the end of the year. Meanwhile Kath Gotts has been appointed to write the music and the lyrics. Alamy Stock Photos If the reaction to the Rooney vs Vardy drama has taught us anything, it is that the world is ready for a new generation of fictionalised WAGS. In fact, during the peak of the drama last week, Liz Lake, producer and writer of Footballers’ Wives told Radio Times: ‘If there’s an appetite for it, and enough people want it, it would be worth having that conversation… I think we’d prefer to have an update than a reboot, a revival moving it forward.’ Perhaps that’s where the idea for the musical was birthed? Either way, we’re ready for it. Bring on 2020!
