You’re not alone. With the endless Christmas traditions and household rules to obey throughout the festive season, it’s only natural to speculate on whether the royals have their own special Christmas cuisine or if their menu sees them getting stuck into a huge plate of turkey and roast potatoes like the rest of us. Luckily, former royal chef Darren McGrady has revealed all. Getty Images As we already know, each year the royal family spend Christmas together at Sandringham House in Norfolk. We also know that they open all Christmas presents on Christmas Eve as opposed to Christmas morning due to their German heritage. But now, McGrady, who worked for Queen Elizabeth II, Diana Princess of Wales and Princes William and Harry, has explained exactly what the royals do (and eat) on Christmas Day. ‘Christmas morning, the family eats a hardy breakfast before heading off to church,’ he said. ‘After church, that’s when they have a big lunch that includes a salad with shrimp or lobster, and a roasted turkey, and all of your traditional side dishes like parsnips, carrots, Brussels sprouts and Christmas pudding with brandy butter for dessert.’ Getty Images He continued: ‘They stick with the same meal year after year. Once they’ve eaten, everyone sits down and watches the Queen’s Christmas speech. Afterward, they all go their own way before coming together again for afternoon tea and traditional Christmas fruitcake, then they gather again in the evening, where a buffet dinner with 15-20 different items awaits them. It’s always a buffet with the chefs at the table carving. They don’t do appetisers on Christmas like many do in the U.S. Instead, appetisers and canapes are reserved for New Year’s Eve.’ And if you need further proof that the Queen is just like the rest of us during Christmas, you’ll be pleased to hear that she, too, can’t resist festive sweet treats. ‘The Queen is a major chocoholic, particularly dark chocolate, so she always has a chocolate treat on Christmas,’ McGrady revealed. ‘She also loves mint.’ RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR 50 of the best celebrity Halloween costumes of all time Shirley Ballas ‘ Strictly gave me back my hope’ Davina McCall discusses how men can help women going through the menopause Popular in Celebrity TV chef Gino D Acampo on Sardinia Sophia Loren and scary salads May 25, 2017 The Evergreen Goddess Exercise guru Diana Moran on looking fit and July 10, 2017 More more Julianne Moore November 13, 2017 Author Jill Mansell on designer notebooks commissioning art and the family January 16, 2018 EMOTIONAL TIES Kelly Hoppen on vodka vintage finds and being a April 4, 2018 ‘ I have no regrets’ Millie Mackintosh on divorce debt and reuniting May 20, 2018 EMOTIONAL TIES TV presenter and tennis player Annabel Croft shares her July 1, 2018 Stella Parton ‘ Dolly and I have always been close’ August 12, 2018 Anna Friel on getting jeered in the street shared parenting with September 23, 2018 Queen of primetime Charlotte Riley on juggling rising stardom with pregnancy October 21, 2018 Popular CategoriesFood2704Life2496Fashion2240Beauty1738Celebrity1261Interiors684 Sign up for YOUMail Thanks for subscribing Please check your email to confirm (If you don't see the email, check the spam box) Fashion Beauty Celebrity Life Food Privacy & Cookies T&C Copyright 2022 - YOU Magazine.
