Huge crowds and packed-to-the-brim trains can cause travel chaos in the lead up to Christmas, so it’s usually advisable to book a ticket beforehand to ensure you have a seat and won’t have to queue up for hours on Christmas eve. But when exactly should you book that ticket? Well, Martin Lewis at Money Saving Expert has revealed his thoughts on the exact time you should be booking a train ticket, in terms of how far in advance you should get organised. While we all know we need to allow a little time ahead of our travel dates, but Lewis actually recommends booking tickets a timely 10-12 weeks prior to boarding your train. Getty Images This is of course when the tickets are most in demand, but it’s worth doing as the rail companies offer tickets at their cheapest then. If you’re thinking about Christmas dates, chances are you may be able to book your train home for the festive season already as out of 30 UK rail firms, 17 have already released advance train tickets up to Saturday 21st December or in some cases, even further in the future. Rail firms CrossCountry and Great Western Railway, for example, are already offering tickets up to 27th December. Money Saving Expert recommends signing up to free notifications at Trainline, where you will be alerted when your particular journey is available to book in time for Christmas.
