It’s become one of her autumn wardrobe staples, and for good reason. The Duchess of Cambridge can pair a roll neck with everything from jeans to a skirt and look great, and she’s been wearing a lot of them recently. Her most recent turtleneck outing came this week and was in the form of a subtle purple sweater that had a shorter neck than a usual style. Aside from being chic and versatile, rumour has it there’s a specific reason she reaches for the style so often. Stylist Susie Hasler, who runs Styled by Susie told Daily Mail that she believes Kate chooses polo necks so much because of their practicality. ‘The beauty of a polo neck is that you can wear it in lots of different ways,’ she said. ‘You can wear it tucked into culottes, a pair of jeans for a casual look, or you can also layer it under a pinafore dress or dungarees.’ Getty Images ‘It works as a really chunky layer, so if you don’t like wearing big chunky cardigans, laying a roll neck underneath is more comfortable.’ Kate’s approach to polo necks is to keep things simple. The royal often opts for black or muted tones, and the quality of the fabric always appears to be crucial. She also seems to be a fan of the ‘half roll-neck,’ such as the purple design she wore earlier this week. This is a great option for those who don’t want to commit to a full turtleneck.
