YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life How to join in with the Christmas Eve doorstep bell ring to combat loneliness By You Magazine - December 23, 2020 Earlier this year, Clap For Carers saw us out on our front doorsteps clapping, cheering and banging pots and pans in support of the NHS and other frontline workers who’ve been the saving grace of 2020. And now, a similar initiative aims to help combat loneliness over the Christmas period, following the recent tightened restrictions and tier 4 rules which will see many of us spending the festive period alone. Getty Images The Christmas Eve doorstep bell ring was thought up by Mary Beggs-Reid from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, in order to battle loneliness and bring communities together. It has already been backed by Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds, and is relatively easy to get involved with. Getty Images All you have to do is step out onto your doorstep at 6pm on Christmas Eve and ring a bell to bring the festive spirit to those of us facing this week alone. Panicking you don’t have access to a bell? Well, fear not, because there are plenty of apps you can download that can make the sound for you just as well. Mary Beggs-Reid first set up the initiative on Facebook, where it has already garnered over 450,000 likes. ‘This will be our happy moment. Covid can not take this from us so ring louder,’ she said, according to Evening Standard. ‘This year the Christmas spirit is so needed and for two minutes we can make sure nobody feels alone.’ Getty Images The organiser also added that she has actually spoken on the phone to Boris and Carrie, and that they noted their new son will most definitely be getting involved. ‘He said him, Carrie and Wilfred will be out ringing bells to help Santa on his way.’ ‘They love the idea and will look for bells to join us. They said they support anything helping Santa fly his sleigh for the children.’ We’ll see you out there!
