The budget brand is known for its almost-identical alcoholic drink dupes, but wine from Aldi is especially well-renowned. It’s held in such high regard that it’s been crowned ‘Wine Supermarket of the Year’ at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC). Aldi beat rival Lidl and the more upmarket Waitrose to take the top spot for its wine and spirits range. This marks the third time in just three months that the supermarket has won an award for its selection. At the end of January, Aldi was awarded ‘Drinks Retailer of the Year’ at the Retail Industry Awards. At the Drinks Retailing Awards, it picked up the prize for ‘Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year’. Aldi Judges of the IWSC competition praised Aldi for the brand’s creativity. They said: ‘the innovation achieved while keeping budget in mind on such a wide scale is second to none’. The judging panel were ‘particularly impressed with options such as a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape and an own-label organic Champagne’, as well as ‘the creation of a home delivery service, staff education and a huge commitment to being sustainable.’ IWSC also noted how Aldi went above and beyond to set up a ‘wine school to educate their increasingly engaged customers, delivering online courses with tips and jargon-free information’. Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: ‘We know our customers want great quality products at the best value and we are incredibly proud of our wine range, which has gone from strength to strength over the past few years.’ To help us celebrate sunny weather and a relaxation of lockdown restrictions, Aldi has recently released a new wine range for spring and summer. Priced between £4.49 and £14.99, customers can find a wide choice of rosé, white and red wines to enjoy together (outdoors, of course).
