Jamie stars as Christian Grey, a wealthy businessman in Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, alongside Dakota Johnson, who plays Anastasia Steele, an English literature student with whom Christian develops an intense relationship. Speaking to Jay Rayner’s Out To Lunch podcast on Tuesday, he added: ‘We knew that because the books were adored by so many… but panned by many, it was probably going to be the same thing for the movies.’ He said he treated the role of the infamous Christian Grey just like any other acting job but ‘just simulating more sex’. But the 36-year-old also described Christian as ‘gross’, adding: ‘I don’t think I’ll ever play a character less like me.’ Moviestore/REX/Shutterstock Fifty Shades author E L James told YOU Magazine recently that she insisted on having control over the director, writer, cast, trailers, and screenplay for the film adaptation of her bestselling novels. She requested this clause in her contract because she cared so much about not disappointing her fans. ‘Hollywood is tough,’ she said. ‘The first movie was a huge challenge and the director had very, very, definite ideas of what this should be. And it wasn’t particularly Fifty Shades of Grey. It was something else… So that was difficult.’ Taylor-Johnson was replaced as director for the next two movies, which scored higher audience satisfaction scores in test screenings, ‘and that’s all I’m going to say about that’, Erika concluded.
