The Women’s Prize For Fiction has announced its shortlist of finalists, one of which will win the award (plus £30,000) on 5th June, 2019. The six books were picked by this year’s judging panel: University of Reading alum, Professor Kate Williams, bestselling author Dolly Alderton, journalist Arifa Akbar, psychotherapist Leyla Hussein and entrepreneur Sarah Wood. We fell totally in love with these books and the amazing worlds they created. These books are fiction at its best – brilliant, courageous and utterly captivating.’ Women’s Prize for Fiction Shortlist 2019, photographed by Sam Holden Agency So without further ado, these are the six shortlisted novels, which we recommend picking up and reading, STAT: The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker Written by Booker Prize-winning author Pat Barker, The Silence Of Girls revolves around the legend of The Iliad, and is told by the women who were captured and lived in the Greek camp at the end of the Trojan War. My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite This story sees Korede dealing with her sister Ayoola, who has a habit of calling her to come and clear up her messes, and in particular, the three messes she has made when she’s killed her current boyfriend in ‘self-defence’. But when Ayoola starts dating a doctor Korede is in love with, things get a bit complicated. Milkman by Anna Burns Milkman, winner of the Booker prize, is a story about a young woman who is trying to keep her sort-of boyfriend a secret, along with an encounter with a milkman. However, she soon gets found out, leading to a tale of gossip and hearsay. Ordinary People by Diana Evans Ordinary People is set in London, and is a book about identity, sex, grief, love, and friendship. Leads Marissa and Damien navigate you through the novel, which you will no doubt relate to. An American Marriage by Tayari Jones This moving book sees newlyweds Celestial and Roy living the American Dream. That is, until Roy is sentenced to twelve years for a crime he did not commit. While Roy’s sentence is eventually overturned, Celestial has already taken comfort in a close friend of the pair, Andre. Circe by Madeline Miller Circe is another tale about Greek mythology, which follows Circe, who is banished by Zeus onto a deserted island but rises up. This is the original story of female strength and tenacity.
