Here is a list of shows and films that are like Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and available to watch on Netflix right now. 1 Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile The film is based on the real life crimes of the American serial killer, Ted Bundy. The film is from the perspective of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer who is played by Lily Collins. Zac Efron plays the lead role of Ted Bundy, one of America’s most notorious serial killers, kidnapper, rapist, burglar and necrophile. He assaulted and murdered young women and girls during the 1970s. He denied his crimes for years however he eventually admitted to 30 murders but the true number of how many victims he had remains unknown. Ted Bundy was sentenced to death by electrocution and died in 1989. 2 Conversations with a Killer The John Wayne Gacy Tapes via Netflix John Wayne Gacy is a convicted serial killer and sex offender from Chicago, Illinois. Gacy was an aspiring politician, beloved local contractor, and part-time clown-for-hire who murdered 33 young men between 1972 and 1976. A lot of his victims were found buried under his house, other bodies were found in the nearby Des Plaines River. Gacy became known as the “Killer Clown” and he even makes a feature in the final episode of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. 3 The Staircase The Staircase is a 13-episode true crime docuseries about the 2001 death of novelist Michael Peterson’s wife, Kathleen Peterson. He claimed she died after falling down the stairs at their home, but a medical examiner determined she had been beaten with a weapon, which led to Peterson becoming a suspect in what would become a murder investigation. 4 Worst Roommate Ever via Netflix This series is about exactly what the title says – the worst roommate ever. Each story starts out as people believing the person they live with is harmless but it soon turns out that’s not the case. The five-part documentary focuses on different true stories, all of which are about when roommates turn out to be literal killers. One woman, Dorothea Puente was dubbed as the Death House Landlady after she murdered at least nine former lodgers. 5 The Sins of Our Mother The Sins of Our Mother tells the harrowing story of a mother who killed two of her own children. It’s a three-part series that focuses on Lori Vallow who, in 2019, killed two of her kids. Her two children went missing and a social media storm ensued, months later their bodies were found and it was their own mother under suspicion. 6 Keep Sweet Pray and Obey via Netflix Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey tells the harrowing story of the Fundamentalists Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) cult and how it was exposed to the world. The cult leader, also known as the “prophet”, Warren Jeffs saw hundreds of women and children abused on a daily basis and his family has historically been involved for years. The FLDS is a brand of Mormonism, which is a brand of Christianity. The group is actually classified as a hate group in the US due to Warren Jeffs’ extremist views on people of colour, women and the LGBTQ+ community. Rulon Jeffs became president of the FLDS in the mid-eighties. When he died a few years later, he was thought to have had around 20 wives and 60 children. 7 I Just Killed My Dad Netflix dropped I Just Killed My Dad earlier this year and it follows the story of the Templet family. Anthony Templet killed his father Burt and didn’t face any prison time despite never denying what he did. However the story isn’t as simple as that, it goes all the way back to when Burt took his son from the family. Fast forward 11 years and his family are seeing him for the first time since going missing and it’s because he’s all over the news for killing his dad. 8 Believe Me The Abduction of Lisa McVey The Abduction of Lisa McVey is based on a true story about Lisa McVey, a 17-year-old girl who was abducted by a serial killer in 1984. The film depicts the 26 hours where Lisa was held and tortured by her abductor Bobby Joe Long. Just hours before she was taken, Lisa McVey had been planning to take her own life but has since said the entire ordeal made her determined to survive. McVey was found tortured and sexually assaulted before she managed to persuade Long to set her free – making her the only victim to survive him. 9 Crime Scene The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel The Netflix series focuses on the 2013 death of Canadian student Elisa Lam, but also touches upon some of the other cases. The hotel, located on Skid Row a neighbourhood in downtown LA, opened its doors in 1924 and since has been the home to many murders and crimes. Hotel manager Amy Price is interviewed in the Netflix series and says there were around 80 deaths there during the 10-years she served. Here’s a rundown of all the deaths and violence that took place at the Cecil Hotel. 10 Night Stalker via Netflix The Night Stalker is all about Richard Ramirez – one of America’s most prolific serial killers ever. At the time Richard Ramirez was 24-years-old and terrorised the streets of Los Angeles and San Francisco for over a year before he was hunted down. Richard Ramirez was given 19 life sentences for 13 counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder, 11 counts of sexual assault and 14 counts of burglary. You’re probably wondering why he was known as the Night Stalker, well it’s because most of his crimes took place as his victims slept. In the end after he was caught, Richard Ramirez was sentenced to death by gas chamber however he actually died in June 2013. He had blood cancer and died because of complications. 11 The Sons of Sam A Descent Into Darkness In 1976, a serial killer was on the loose in New York. Over a year after his first crime, David Berkowitz was found to be the man behind these killings. But this wasn’t the full story, the evidence didn’t add up and Berkowitz admitted he wasn’t alone in committing his crimes. The documentary however doesn’t mention The Son of Sam law which was introduced – this law meant criminals like Berkowitz weren’t allowed to cash in on their crimes. Essentially meaning the money criminals make from their cases and selling their “stories” to publishers now went to the state. 12 American Horror Story Murder House So obviously if you liked Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story then you will like Ryan Murphy’s other series – American Horror Story. Specifically Murder House because Evan Peters plays a 17-year-old psychiatric patient who has a bunch of dark secrets. Tate committed a mass shooting at Westfield High, taking the lives of 15 students and he was then killed by the SWAT team in his bedroom. Since then he has resided in the house as a ghost.
