It feels like people who didn’t know much about the Milwaukee Monster before, know every inch of his life story now. His horrifying crimes have been brought to light for the new generation, and there’s no excuse for making fun of the devastation he caused. Obviously, a number of artists didn’t get the memo. These HUGE singers and rappers are old enough to know first-hand how much Dahmer’s murders impacted marginalised communities, but… uh, they still chose to use him as imagery in their songs. You don’t need me to tell you what this means in context, but let’s just say it’s conjuring up a pretty literal image. The song has actually caught a lot of backlash since Netflix’s Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story came out, with people saying it’s “disrespectful” and makes them want to “switch off”. 2 Nicki Minaj Photo via Young Money Records/YouTube Nicki featured in a song by Future back in 2018, and while she can only be heard for a short time, her lyrics definitely made a statement. Because, y’know, he’s quirky and edgy and he wants you to know it. One of his most famous is Must Be The Ganja, from his Relapse album which was released in 2009. The lyrics are: I can be a Dalai Lama/And be calm or bring drama/A step beyond a Jeffrey Dahmer. But, at the beginning of the singer’s career (when her songs were still meant to be slightly tongue-in-cheek), this lyric popped up in the title track: I’ll pull a Jeffrey Dahmer/I eat boys up, breakfast and lunch. But one of their lesser known songs, Electric City, casually mentions one of America’s worst serial killers for seemingly no reason other than… artistic “edge”?
