The Addams family have been around since the late 1930s with the first cartoon of the family being published in the New Yorker in 1938. Ever since they’ve been a permanent fixture in our lives with multiple film and TV adaptations. However, the new series Wednesday on Netflix, will be the first ever project to put Wednesday firmly in the centre. The series has been devised by Tim Burton and this is everything you need to know about it: What is Wednesday about Wednesday will be an eight episode series focusing on Wednesday’s time at Nevermore Academy where she’s balancing new relationships whilst also trying to master her psychic abilities. The series has been called “a unique mix of fantasy-horror-mystery-comedy”, and this is the official synopsis for the show released by Netflix: “Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.” The show has been created by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough and directed by Tim Burton. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Miles Millar said they didn’t want the show to feel like a remake and it is very much its own show. He said: “That’s something that was very important to the show—that it didn’t feel like a remake or a reboot. It’s something that lives within the Venn diagram of what happened before, but it’s its own thing. It’s not trying to be the movies or the ’60s TV show. That was very important to us and very important to Tim.” via Netflix Alfred Gough said Tim Burton called them three days after receiving the script to express his interest in the show and how he liked the element of being able to focus on Wednesday. He said: “He was interested in where it was going, the mystery of the show. He had a lot of questions about the previous television work we’d done, like how we were able to achieve it. “He really loved that you had time to be with Wednesday and explore the character and you didn’t have to, you know, wrap things up in an hour and 45 minutes.” Miles Millar added: “The ambition of the show was to make it an eight-hour Tim Burton movie.” Who will be playing Wednesday via Instagram @jennaortega The main role of the series will be played by 19-year-old Jenna Ortega, who is most well known for her roles in Jane The Virgin, You, and Scream. Jenna was cast in the role of Wednesday in May last year and she announced the news on her Instagram with a post of the script of the show saying: “New chapter. Hope I can do Wednesday Addams justice. *snaps twice*.” Who is in the rest of the cast Joining Jenna in Wednesday will be Catherine Zeta-Jones in the role of Morticia Addams, Luis Guzmán will be playing Wednesday’s father Gomez Addams and Isaac Ordonez is playing Wednesday’s brother Pugsley.
