Getty Images Based on the podcast of same name, Homecoming, a twisted psychological thriller directed by Sam Esmail. In it, Roberts stars as Heidi Bergman, a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Centre, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life. Canadian actor Stephan James plays Walter Cruz, one of these soldiers eager to begin the next chapter of his life. Also in a lead role is Heidi’s mother, played by Sissy Spacek, Bobby Cannavale who portrays Colin Belfast, the man in charge at the Homecoming Transitional Support Centre, and Shea Whigham, who is a Department of Defense auditor. As the trailer shows, things take a very dark turn for everyone involved. Amazon’s official synopsis for the series reads: ‘Homecoming is a mind-bending psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts and directed by Sam Esmail (creator of Mr Robot). Heidi Bergman is a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life. Walter Cruz is one of these soldiers, eager to begin the next phase of his life. Overseeing Heidi and the facility is Colin Belfast, an ambitious company man whose manic demands point to questionable motives. ‘Four years later, Heidi has started a new life, living with her mother and working as a small-town waitress, when a Department of Defense auditor comes to her with questions about why she left the Homecoming facility. ‘Heidi begins to realise that there’s a whole other story behind the story she’s been telling herself.’ Mind-bending, we know.
