Fashion’s three big trends are making their mark on our living spaces, too. Here’s how to give your home an autumn/winter update. Textile designer Emma Shipley, who’s known for her exotic bird and wild animal prints, on managing the menagerie. Ben Broomfield Where do you take your inspiration from? I’m drawn to nature and science, and I’ve always loved fantasy literature and films, so these influences come together to create unique designs set in a half-imaginary world. Why the jungle theme? My grandmother grew up in India surrounded by jungle, and my father in Africa. When I was a child, they would tell me amazing stories of the animals and landscapes of those places which seemed incredibly exotic and exciting. Your dos and don’ts of bold pattern? I love pattern on pattern – as long as there are colours that are common throughout a scheme it can work really well. However, if you find full-on animal print too much, a few colourful illustrated cushions on a plain sofa or chair can lift a room, giving it personality and exoticism. So why is the animal-print trend so popular right now? eople are being a bit braver in their interior choices, in part because of social media. You can get so many ideas from Instagram alone, and see how to make strong patterns and colours work. I think that people are also craving a connection with nature. And the next big trend for our homes? Maximalism is here to stay. There are so many different styles to explore within this trend – it’s only just getting started! People are also more aware of issues such as sustainability and the ethics of what they buy and I’m sure that will only grow. Incorporating statement prints in a small space will make a room appear larger and more interesting. Combine patterns – just choose more simplified versions of your primary fabric. If you love florals, make your main fabric one that combines several different types of flower, then mix in secondary patterns with only one or two similar flowers in toning shades. There are plenty of peel and stick options that are easy to remove if you change your mind. Go nuts all at once. Start with the bare bones of a room, then slowly add statement pieces over time as you grow in confidence. Enter the statement wall Wide-angled wallpapers were a big interiors trend in the early 1800s, when images of jungles and far-flung lands were used to bring a sense of the exotic into the Georgian home. Use these elements in layers, from strong to subtle, to create an overall balanced look. Add texture and pattern to illustrate areas of interest in a room and guide the eye to focal points, such as above a sofa or bed frame. Try layering a flat-weave rug over a sheepskin or wool version, and play with different shapes. Accessories, such as woven vases and decorative plates, are an easy way to add pattern to a room.
