Stepping into the new season in wool trousers from Joseph, a cashmere jumper by Lee Mathews and slides by The Row. As leaves turn brown and an unmistakable chill hangs in the air I always try to focus on the wardrobe upsides to get me through the inevitable end-of-summer grump. And knitwear in all its shapes and forms is definitely a welcome consolation prize. This post-lockdown summer has in lots of ways felt like a cheat – a flaky fake that promised but never really delivered. ‘I kept waiting for something to happen, but I’m not sure what that was,’ a friend said to me this week. I know exactly what she means. On the positive side, I’m eager to start a new season full of promise and style excitements and I’ve already begun to unpack some of my woolly favourites. I’m also planning to add a couple of hero newbies to the family this autumn-winter. One of my go-to looks I’ll be wearing on repeat this autumn is wide-leg wool trousers. These cream ones with a subtle fleck (see the main photo) are from Joseph’s new collection. I’ve teamed them with a slightly oversized cashmere rollneck. This is a sleek yet easy look that can be worn now with slides, sandals and a favourite tote, then layered with a tonal coat and boots later. If you are indulging in a pair of woolly bottoms, shop in-store so you can get the feel of the fabric against your skin. Also make sure their cut flatters your leg and waist. Avoid ones that are too wide and shapeless, which can make you look like you’ve stepped into a potato sack, and instead opt for narrow at the top, flared at the bottom styles, which are easier to wear. Here are my other top shopping tips for sensational new-season knitwear… I prefer to invest in quality wool knitwear that will keep its shape. Search preloved sites for the nearly new designer cuts and quality that will last, rather than be tempted by a quick fix of manmade fibres on the high street. Look for special details that make your knitwear piece more lovable and snug-able – favourite touches of mine are turtlenecks, exaggerated cuffs, fisherman ribs and a more fitted simple round- neck shape to team with high-waisted trousers and skirts. For accessories, try a chunky necklace to sit over the neckline or a gold cuff. Lastly, experiment with different shapes and textures by tucking a jumper into high-waist trousers or rolling up sleeves to reveal a shirt cuff.
