Okay, so the weather was a little disappointing, but being able to hug our loved ones and go to a real bar almost made up for it. Finally, we could enjoy proper cocktails made by professionals, instead of drinking homemade ‘quarantinis‘ for lack of anything else to do. Budget supermarket Aldi conducted research into the UK’s drinking habits this summer, to find that almost 6.5 million people claimed they enjoyed cocktails more this past season than in previous years. In fact, 1 in 10 Brits have even paid for a mixology course and a quarter said they wanted to learn to ‘make cocktails like they do in films’. Alamy According to the Aldi poll, it turns out that the creamy Piña Colada topped the UK’s favourite cocktails list. 27 per cent thought of the Piña Colada as their best summer beverage, beating Mojitos, Negronis and Espresso Martinis, which were deemed the nation’s favourite cocktail generally earlier this year. Alamy Another fruity cocktail, Sex on the Beach, was most popular in the South East and Yorkshire & the Humber, with 24 per cent and 28 per cent of the vote, respectively. London’s love for gin doesn’t seem to be dwindling either, with the gin-based Negroni three times more popular in the capital as a favourite cocktail than nationally. Mojito (26.9 per cent) 3. Margarita (22 per cent) 4. Espresso Martini (18 per cent) 5. Whiskey on the rocks (16 per cent) 6. Sex on the Beach (16 per cent) 7. Bloody Mary (13 per cent) 8. White Russian (11 per cent) 9. Long Island Iced Tea (11 per cent) 10. Cosmopolitan (10 per cent) Pritesh Mody, a leading UK drinks expert and cocktail presenter on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, said: ‘It’s great to see a classic like Piña Colada claiming the top spot but I’m sure this year we’ll see people experimenting more than ever, with huge numbers of people saying they’d like to learn how to mix.’ Fancy a drink, anyone?
