The idea of spending the rest of your life with someone, for better or worse, may sound romantic when exchanging vows but in practise, it can be quite the opposite at times. Luckily, new research has revealed what the secret to a happy marriage is and surprisingly, it is far from what we would expect. According to research from One4all, 76 per cent of adults in Britain believe that to have a happy and healthy marriage, couples should argue often. Getty Images That’s right, forget the idea of a peaceful home free of rows and bickering, because in reality, it is the opposite that seems to work wonders for long-term relationships – all in moderation, of course. In fact, the study revealed that the majority of Brits believe that married couples need to have an average of 3.9 arguments per month to maintain a happy marriage. Precise, we know. Explaining the results, Aoife Davey, group-marketing manager at One4all Gift cards, said: ‘Traditionally, arguing may have been considered unhealthy but actually many Britons now recognise the important role of expressing your feelings – both positive and negative – in relationships.’ ‘Just make sure that tempers are kept in check, you are respectful and that you are doing the more positive essential components regularly, too.’ Getty Images Of course, this isn’t the only key ingredient to a happy marriage. As Aoife explained, the positive components are just as essential, including arranging regular dates with your other half and having an active sex life. This was also highlighted in the research project as on average, participants believed that couples should have sex 8.35 times a month, go on 3.8 dates, and compliment each other 14.98 times a month too. However, all of the results did vary depending on which part of the country the participants were from. Individuals in Belfast believed that couples should have sex 10.26 and argue 5.48 times per month, while adults in Sheffield insisted that couples should have sex 9.62 times and go on 5.08 dates every month. In Manchester, on the other hand, participants believed that couples should have heartfelt conversations 17.81 times a month and also pay compliments to each other 16.17 times. So in a nutshell, the actual secret to a happy marriage is to have a healthy balance – as with anything in life really, hey?
