YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life Dog owners are happier people than cat owners says this study By You Magazine - April 10, 2019 Earlier this year, we reported that women get a much better night’s sleep next to their dogs than their partners. And that’s why the latest news about our furry friends comes as no surprise for dog lovers. New research has revealed that people who own dogs are happier in life than those who have cats. The revelation was made by the General Social Survey (GSS), which is run by social research organisation NORC at the University of Chicago, after they found that 36 per cent of dog owners report being ‘very happy’ compared to just 18 per cent of cat owners. As reported by The Washington Post, as well as boosting happiness levels, the research also highlighted that dog owners are more likely to be married and own homes than cat owners. The results were found after the GSS began gathering data on the attitudes, behaviours and attributes of their American participants since 1972. The group consisted of around 1,500 to 3,000 adults, who were tracked on everything from their marijuana habits to their relationship status. Ultimately, it was concluded that the overall happiness of dog owners was significantly higher than cat owners. Getty Images This isn’t the first study to highlight the benefits of owning a dog. According to The Independent, another recent study of 2,000 adults found that dog owners walk an average of 870 miles a year, which means not only do they tend to be more fit than those who do not own dogs, but that they also have overall improved levels of mental health and reduced stress levels. Similarly, research has also proven that owning a dog also benefits our sleeping habits as it was found that we – especially women – actually have a better night’s sleep with our dogs by our side, after examining 962 women living in the USA. In fact, the results showed that they are better companions in bed then human partners.
