Get ready for the BBC’s newest thriller, The Cry, then. Starring Jenna Coleman, of Victoria and Doctor Who fame, the drama follows a young family who travel to Australia from Scotland with their newborn. Coleman, who plays the mother Joanna, and her husband, Alistair, played by Top of the Lake’s Ewen Leslie, are there to try and seek custody of Alistair’s child with his ex-wife, played by Asher Keddie, but have have their world turned upside down when their own baby is abducted. Talking to the Guardian, she said: ‘I spent a good first chunk of it just thinking they’d completely miscast – and why on earth me?’ ‘I’m not a mother! I really kind of hit myself over the head with it. I felt there was obviously something I wouldn’t be able to capture. It was something so… well, primal that I haven’t literally experienced. And I’ve really struggled with that.’ I didn’t know it then but that’s when the freak show began, two faces, two Joanna’s @Jenna_Coleman_ in The Cry, this Sunday at 9pm #TheCry pic.twitter.com/VGDGyMjfRz - The Cry (@thecrybbc) September 25, 2018 She said that she turned to friends, who were mothers, for advice on how to portray her character and learnt a lot about the ‘day-to-day realities of what it is being a new mum’. And knowing what an incredible actress she is, despite her concerns, we have no doubt she’s honoured the role. The BBC have confirmed that the show will air on Sunday 30th September, so it will fill the Bodyguard-shaped hole in our viewing schedules. We wonder if we could fit in a quick read of the book before then! Silence can be worse than the most desperate cry.@Jenna_Coleman_ is Joanna in #TheCry.
