YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Food This is officially the nation’ s perfect roast dinner By You Magazine - September 10, 2018 In households across the country, it simply wouldn’t be a Sunday without a roast dinner. A pile of meat, potatoes, veg and all the trimmings (plus lashings of gravy, of course) is a national institution in the UK – but we don’t always agree on what makes the perfect plate. The latest survey from YouGov has revealed that the most popular meat to serve with a roast dinner is beef, with 33% of us cooking up a joint on a regular basis. Chicken came in second with 27%, followed by lamb with 20%. 8% prefer a vegetarian option, and only 6% would pick pork. Getty Images One thing that 89% have in common is that they agree that roast potatoes have a place in the line-up, and 76% must have gravy (we can only assume that the only 24% like their dinners dry). In terms of vegetable accompaniments, roast parsnips proved to be the most popular, with 49% opting for the root veg. Next up was boiled broccoli and peas, both of which earned 45%, and boiled carrots, with 44% – and some of the nation seems to celebrate Christmas all year round, with 32% listing Brussels sprouts as a go-to favourite. In fact, the subject of pigs in blankets caused the biggest intergenerational divide. The younger you are, the more likely sausages wrapped in bacon are to feature in their ideal Sunday dinner, with 52% of 18-24 year olds wanting them compared to only 12% of 65+ year olds. Below is the full breakdown of YouGov’s research – so the next time you’re cooking for a crowd, you know which sides and sauces are likely to get polished off first. Now, who’s hungry?
