I don’t feel guilty about anything. Where is home? Wherever my wife Catherine is. I have a couple of places, including a converted church in North London, with big walls and big paintings. Career plan B? I’m still working on plan A, which is going pretty well. I made more money in my career directing commercials than I did from photography. Who would play you in a movie of your life? Johnny Depp. Biggest bugbear? Political correctness, which I find kind of silly. As a child you wanted to be… Grown-up. Earliest memory? The London Blitz. We were bombed out of our two-bedroomed flat in Leyton when I was about four and had to move to East Ham. Secret to a happy relationship? Honesty. Your best quality? Humour. And your worst? Humour – it always gets me into trouble. Most romantic thing you’ve ever done? I’m not really a romantic. Last meal on earth? Whatever they had at the Last Supper. Dream dinner-party guests? Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump would be an interesting combination. Advice to teenage self? Keep your mouth shut. Cat or dog? My favourite dog, an 18-year-old Jack Russell called Pig, died a couple of months ago, leaving me with a chow called Mortimer. I don’t like cats because they kill more birds than any other animal. What do you see when you look in the mirror? Old age – it doesn’t worry me. On a day off we’d find you… I don’t really have days off and I don’t take holidays either, although my wife does. Career highlight? I’m still waiting for it. Favourite tipple? Water – I haven’t drunk alcohol for 50 years. What did you have for breakfast today? Pancakes with some kind of syrup on them. Secret skill? I do other things apart from taking pictures, such as painting and sculpture. Anything that would make your life better? £100 million in the bank would help! Philosophy? Make the best of it. Biggest lesson you’ve learnt about money? It’s better to have it than not. Biggest lesson you’ve learnt about women? It’s a bit like money – it’s better to have one than not! Where would you time-travel to? I wouldn’t go anywhere because we’re living in such a very interesting time. First record you bought? The first record I was given, when I was about ten, was a 78rpm of Frank Sinatra singing ‘Stormy Weather’ by my gay uncle Artie, who lived with us. Most extravagant purchase? I’ve spent a lot of money over the years on cars, including a Ferrari and several Rolls-Royces. Best present? Pig, who looked like a little piglet when he was given to me by Catherine. I really loved him. Biggest fear? Losing curiosity. Celebrity crush? The author W Somerset Maugham, who was the first famous person I photographed in the late 1950s. I’d read his books when I was doing national service in the RAF and thought he was a terrific writer. Happiness is… Catherine – we’ve been married for over 30 years.
