This shift came about especially as we discovered the struggle of maskne – acne caused from wearing a face mask. But as lockdown restrictions gradually ease and we have actual plans in the diary again, we’re picking up our make up essentials once more. Although, if you haven’t used much of your make up since the first lockdown, there’s a good chance it needs to be replaced. In fact, 87 per cent of your make up is probably out of date. Alamy Drench conducted research to find out just how often we should be replacing makeup items. The home furnishing brand found that 87 per cent of products such as foundation, concealer, mascara, blusher, lipstick and eyeshadow need to be replaced annually. Makeup products that contain water should be replaced more often than powdered products, as bacteria grows on them more easily. So basically, if you haven’t bought any new makeup since the pandemic began you might need to reinvest to ensure your skin is germ-free. Alongside expiration dates, Drench also analysed the average cost of each product to see how much a makeup refresh will set us back. Face Concealer: £5.20 to replace every 6 months Setting spray: £8.80 to replace every 6 months Foundation: £5.70 to replace every 12 months Loose Powder:£9.20 to replace every 12 months Cream Blush: £9.50 to replace every 12 months Powdered Bronzer: £5.10 to replace every 24 months Liquid Highlight: £11 to replace every 24 months Eyes Mascara: £9.50 to replace every 6 months Liquid Eyeliner: £4.10 to replace every 6 months Brow Gel: £6.50 to replace every 6 months Eyeshadow Palette: £23.40 to replace every 12 months Eyeliner Pencil: £2.60 to replace every 12 months Lips Lip Gloss: £7.70 to replace every 6 months Normal Lipstick: £9 to replace every 12 months Lip Liner: £5.90 to replace every 12 months Drench also spoke with award-winning makeup artist Joyce Connor about how often we should be replacing makeup and washing brushes. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Reading UK – Make Up Artist (@joyceconnormakeup) Connor explained: ‘Liquid and cream products can harbour bacteria, especially if they’re in a jar and you’re using your fingers to remove the product. Old makeup can cause breakouts, irritation and even skin sensitivity. Old mascara can cause eye infections and irritation.’ Connor also added that you can tell when mascara is out of date by listening to it. ‘Mascara makes a plop sound when it’s fresh and still useable, when you stop hearing that sound you know it’s time for a new one,’ she said. Alamy As for other makeup products, if they don’t smell the same anymore it’s probably past its best. The oil and water in liquid foundations tend to separate when it’s out of date. She also explained that if you wear makeup daily, brushes should be washed weekly. ‘Wash your brushes with a mild shampoo or antibacterial washing up liquid, and dry them by laying them on their side and leaving overnight to dry,’ Connor said.
