She was nominated for four Oscars in her lifetime. She died in October 2016. The photo the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences used for Patterson was actually one of Jan Chapman on the left below an Australian film producer who is alive Getty Images, Bei / BEI/BEI/Shutterstock (Patterson is in the middle of the photo on the right, standing next to Chapman.) In an email to Variety, which broke the story, Chapman wrote: "I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson." She told Variety she had urged Patterson's agency to check any photo that might be used and understood the agency had been told the Academy had it all covered. She added: "I am alive and well and an active producer.” Chapman worked alongside Patterson in films such as Bright Star and The Piano. She is also the producer of the cult film The Babadook. Janet, an Academy member and four-time Oscar-nominated costume designer, was beloved in our community. We extend our deepest apologies and condolences to the Patterson family."
