If you’re the former, then you’ll be very pleased to hear the latest news for dog owners. While this may not come as much of a surprise to those who have experienced having both pets, a new study has found that dogs are far more loving towards their owners than cats. Getty Images We’re all well aware that a dog is a man’s (or a woman’s) best friend, but it turns out our dogs love us just as much we love them – or certainly more than our cats do anyway. New research has found that dogs love their owners five times more than cats do. Now that’s a golden point to bring up in your next cat or dog argument. According the study, carried out as part of BBC’s Cat Vs Dog documentary, dogs are a lot more caring and affectionate. The conclusion was reached after neuroscientist Paul Zak took saliva samples from ten dogs and ten cat before allowing the pets to play with their owners for ten minutes. He then took a sample from each animal to test it for oxytocin, a hormone known as the ‘love hormone.’ His results showed that the dogs had a 57.2% increase in oxytocin after playing with their owners, meanwhile cats only showed a 12% increase. Getty Images ‘I was really surprised to discover that dogs produced such high levels of oxytocin. The dog level of 57.2 percent is a very powerful response,’ Zak said. ‘From this sample it’s true to say that these dogs love their owners five times more than the cats do.’ He continued: ‘It was also a nice surprise to discover that cats produce any at all. At least some of the time, cats seem to bond with their owners.’ So no matter how aloof your cat may be, know that it still loves you. Just nowhere near as much a dog would.
