Getty Images I managed to shock a friend into a stunned silence over dinner the other night. Then the questions began. ‘So you’re not wearing any foundation? Or make-up?’ Nope. ‘That’s just your skin?’ Yep. The product on my face – and what I’ve been putting on it every day, twice a day for the past month – was a new cream called Spectacle Performance Crème (£76, spectacleskincare.com). I say cream, but the texture is more like a whipped gel – wonderfully light on the skin. A new brand, Spectacle is already gaining serious traction with this first launch and that’s because it’s incredibly good. I’m the first to say that there’s no time-travel miracle to be found in a pot of cream. But a great formula made with efficacious ingredients can visibly improve your skin tone – and this does just that. My skin looks healthier, brighter, smoother, clearer and more vibrant because of using this. It also contains an element of translucent primer which adds a natural glow to the complexion. It really is splendid. This cream is part of a skincare trend going back to products that are formulated with a complex list of ingredients, so we can buy just one bottle rather than mixing a load of different serums ourselves in bathrooms that have come to resemble science labs. The trouble is, self-administering can lead to aggravating skin and causing new problems. Now the talk is of ‘micro-dosing’ – applying small amounts of effective ingredients that are so carefully balanced they avoid bad skin reactions. So Spectacle’s Performance Crème includes retinal (a non-irritative form of retinol) plus copper amino acids – both boost collagen and help reduce fine lines – as well as hydrating hyaluronic acid, brightening vitamin C and more to create a real powerhouse in a pump. Another skincare product – and brand – I’m obsessed with and have been layering under Spectacle is Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Dark Spot Serum (£49, cultbeauty.co.uk). Biossance has a strong focus on good environmental practice and its squalane (which hydrates and can boost collagen) is totally plant-based.
