YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Interiors Inside Maison Mirabeau An 18th-century house on a wine estate in Provence By You Magazine - August 8, 2021 Contemporary touches and some clever licks of paint have turned this 18th-century house on a wine estate in Provence into a corker of a family home Natural colours and textures from the exposed stone wall and beams, terracotta floor tiles, wooden chairs and linen sofa covers make a for a living area that’s cool in summer and cosy in winter. We looked at 39 properties before we found this,’ says Jeany Cronk of her dream house near St Tropez in Provence. The kitchen splashback features blush-pink Moroccan tiles from mosaicfactory.com which perfectly echo the shade of the units. the Baskets on Legs are from jfrebornhome.com. The rattan lampshade is from decoradore.pl Jeany and her husband Stephen upped sticks from London with their young children 12 years ago to set up their phenomenally successful Mirabeau wine brand. They now make some of the world’s favourite rosés as well as an award-winning pink gin. The couple had always planned to buy their own estate with vineyards to start their regenerative viticulture project and, after ten years living nearby, they finally found what they were looking for here. A mosaic table and wrought-iron chairs lend a rustic feel to the dining terrace, which is sheltered from the sun by a creeping wisteria The drop-dead-gorgeous seven-bedroom house, surrounded by nearly 35 acres of vineyards, dates from Napoleonic times. Inside, the spaces are unusually large by traditional Provençal standards where rooms are often small and dark to keep out South of France’s searing summer heat, so it’s beautifully light and airy. ‘We bought the estate in 2019 and did most of the work through the thick of Covid last year, which wasn’t very easy,’ says Jeany. ‘Luckily, all the major structural aspects were in good order, and there were lovely original features such as the exposed beams and the vaulted ceiling in the dining room, but the entire house needed redecorating. I wanted to recycle as many existing things as possible to avoid creating unnecessary waste so, for example, we painted floorboards white and kept the terracotta floors. This second-floor bedroom has a splendid view over the vineyards. The bedside lamps are from fabuleuse-factory.com The kitchen, on the other hand, needed a total overhaul.’ A local carpenter built tongue- and-groove units, which Jeany painted creamy pink, then paired them with modern fittings and a composite marble top. The tabletop was made from reclaimed pine and sits on an industrial steel base, while a large rattan light fitting hangs low over the table to soften the look and create a cosy glow. Jeany has put her stamp on the house using natural materials to add texture and interest to the neutral palette. There’s also a mix of decorative pieces: French painted furniture sits alongside Moroccan tiles, vintage kilims, statement lights and artwork from local galleries. Crockery from the nearby village of Salernes shares the table with plates and glasses from Anthropologie. This picture-perfect estate in the plaines des maures nature reserve is a working farm. Chickens and ducks give delicious eggs; pigs help reduce food waste, and alpacas provide manure for the vegetable garden Jeany loves to entertain. The spacious living area has French doors opening on to the terrace overlooking the vineyards. ‘It’s the perfect backdrop for our wine and lovely food,’ she smiles. ‘Now we’ve found our dream at last, we’re so happy to share it.’ In the bathroom, a built-in cupboard was removed to make space for the tiled shower area. The original bath and basins were updated with taps from the Axor-design.com.
