And not only will the programme have a new host, in the form of This Morning and Supermarket Sweep star Rylan Clark-Neal, the BBC is making big changes to ensure its ethos connects with the more eco-conscious climate. BBC Pictures The BBC says that ‘the show will reflect contemporary food themes, from cooking on budget to eating healthily, managing food waste to feeding the whole family, mirroring the changes in food and British cooking over the past decade.’ And to ensure a more sustainable approach, big changes have been made – most notably to loyal fans, including the fact that the famous plastic bags contestants retrieve their ingredients from have been replaced by reuseable totes. The show has also pledged to avoid single-use plastic containers where possible, donate unused fruit/vegetables and non-perishable items to a local food bank, favour seasonal, locally-sourced produce and Fair Trade items, and use separate colour-coded waste bins both on set and backstage to ensure responsible recycling. Alamy Stock Photo ‘One of the biggest sustainability issues we face is from food and packaging waste, so Ready Steady Cook is being brought bang up to date to play its part in tackling this,’ says Rylan. ‘It’s going to be good bye plastic bags and hello jute totes when we hit screens in the New Year. I can’t wait to get stuck in!’ The fast-paced foodie gameshow made its debut in 1994 with Fern Britton at the helm, followed by Ainsley Harriott, who took over in 2000. Each episode saw two celebrity chefs battle it out to create the best meal from a bag of ingredients brought in by a member of the public, with no prior knowledge of what was inside – and it was seriously addictive viewing. For its comeback, the format will remain similar, with two contestants paired up with chefs including Mike Reid, Romy Gill, Akis Petretzikis, Ellis Barrie and Anna Haugh. in the new-look kitchen. First, they’ll have a bag of goods bought to a £10 budget, and just 20 minutes to whip up a delicious dish, but then in a second challenge the time is cut even further, with 10 minutes to make a creation with foods based on audience ingredients cards. Carla-Maria Lawson, Acting Head of BBC Daytime said of the show’s return: ‘Ready Steady Cook is a celebration of the much loved BBC One Daytime show, reimagined for contemporary Britain. The premise of healthy, aspirational food being prepared against the clock will be familiar to the audience, as will the iconic red tomatoes and green peppers! ‘This will be a series for the modern day featuring a brigade of exciting new culinary talent and with Celebrity MasterChef finalist, Rylan at the helm, a teatime treat for a whole new generation of viewers.’ Ready Steady Cook will return to BBC One in 2020.
