YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Celebrity Vanity Fair The new period drama you’ re about to be obsessed with By You Magazine - August 6, 2018 With autumn just around the corner (well, almost), it’s officially acceptable to get excited for our favourite parts of the upcoming season; crunchy leaves, pumpkin spiced lattes and last but certainly not least, new period dramas to get stuck into. This year, ITV have delivered once again with a new series that is set to fill the Downtown Abbey shaped whole in our hearts. Vanity Fair, a new seven-part drama from the creators of Poldark and Victoria, is on its way to our TV screens and it has already been tipped as the biggest show of the year. So, what’s it all about? Here’s everything you need to know… ITV The plot The show’s title may sound familiar to some, and not just due to the popular magazine of the same name, but because it is an adaptation of the literary classic by William Makepeace Thackeray. Set both during and after the Napoleonic Wars, the series centres around anti-hero Becky Sharp – a fiercely strong-willed and cunning young woman from a background of poverty who is desperate to wiggle her way into England’s elite society. After leavings school, Becky befriends and stays with Emmy Sedley, a well-meaning London girl from a family of wealth and privilege. Becky is soon introduced to Emmy’s fiance, the dashing yet selfish Captain Rawdon Crawley, and her arrogant brother, Jos Sedley, who she attempts to marry when he turns out to be the richest young man she has met. But naturally, things don’t go quite to plan and instead take a very complicated turn. ‘Vanity Fair is a massive rollercoaster of a story and we’ve assembled an ensemble cast of real range to do it justice,’ said the show’s executive producer, Damien Timmer. ‘From fast rising stars like Johnny Flynn and Tom Bateman to stage legends like Simon Russell Beale and household names like Suranne Jones and Martin Clunes, all orbiting Olivia Cooke’s irresistible Becky as she conquers the 21st century. We hope Thackeray would approve –and with Michael Palin playing him, why wouldn’t he?!’ The cast Taking centre stage is up and coming Hollywood star Olivia Cooke who will be playing Becky. Viewers will recognise the English actress from big screen movies like Ready Player One and Thoroughbred in which she starred alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, as well as hit US drama Bates Motel. ITV Doctor Foster’s Suranne Jones also stars as the name-dropping Lady Miss Pinkerton, while comedian Michael Plain provides the narration as author Thackeray as mentioned by Timmer. Other key cast members include Doc Martin and Men Behaving Badly star Martin Clunes as the villainous Sir Pitt Crawle, while om Bateman plays George Osborne. Emmy Sedley is played by Line of Duty actress Claudia Jessie with Simon Russell Beale and Claire Skinner as her parents, and School of Rock‘s David Flynn as her brother, Joss. When will it air Regular TV watchers may already have noticed that ITV have started showing the teaser clip for the series during adverts with a cryptic ‘new drama for 2018’ announcement. So while no official air date has been released yet, you can expect to see the first episode sometime in September.
