YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Food You’ re probably pronouncing the names of these foods all wrong By You Magazine - July 13, 2018 If you’ve ever gone to order edamame, quinoa or chorizo in a restaurant, chances are you’ve questioned your pronunciation at some point. Now, a poll of 2,000 adults has revealed that you’re not the only one – and in fact, there are at least 40 common foods and drinks that get us feeling more than a little confused. Getty Images In addition to savoury offerings, sweet treats including macarons, baklava and pain au chocolat also got our tongues in a twist. A third of those quizzed struggle to say ‘brioche’, with almost one in 10 saying ‘bree-ock’ rather than ‘bree-osh’. Top of the list of tricky words? Viennoiserie pastries, cocktail caipirinha and yoghurt-based dip tzatziki. But however tough they are to perfect, these words are worth learning – one in five unfortunate respondents have been served something completely different to what they wanted because of a botched order. A spokesman for French bakery brand Brioche Pasquier, which commissioned the research, said: ‘Not being 100 per cent sure how to pronounce a word can put people in a tricky situation. It’s especially difficult if you’re in a restaurant or somewhere that you can’t get away with saying it wrong. ‘Our results found people are twice as likely to have a go at pronouncing an unfamiliar food word as admit they don’t know how to pronounce it. ‘This can lead to further embarrassment as people get more exciting and unusual words wrong, so it’s probably best to just try and laugh it off.’ Getty Images The 40 hardest foods and drinks to pronounce Viennoiserie 2.
