But what if we told you the famous story almost had a completely different ending? Rob Reiner, who directed the 80s classic starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, has opened up about the original plan for the film, revealing that Harry and Sally were never meant to end up together. Yes, really! Rex Features Celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release, Reiner spoke to Couchsurfing about the initial plot written in the script and honestly, we had no idea. ‘Now, this is interesting that we’re watching this scene because I’d been married for 10 years, I was single for 10 years and making a mess of my personal life, in and out of relationships and not being able to make anything work,’ he said. ‘And when the first draft of the script, or the draft we were going to shoot, Harry and Sally don’t get together. They meet each other years later and walk their separate ways.’ This, of course, would have been an entirely different story to the film we know and love, and who knows if the film would have been as popular had they opted for the ending that was first scripted? Rex Features Reiner then went onto explain that it was meeting his second wife that inspired the ending of When Harry Met Sally that we finally got in cinemas, that’s still adored by thousands today. ‘I met my wife while making the movie and we changed the ending and this is what we came up with,’ he said. ‘Billy came up with some of this dialogue and that’s how we decided to end the movie, that they do end up together.’ Well, you know what that means. We only have one person to really thank for this beloved flick and it is indeed Rob Reiner’s second wife.
