YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Beauty This is how often you need to replace your beauty and skincare tools By You Magazine - July 3, 2018 It’s always tempting to keep things as long as possible to save that extra bit of cash, but when it comes to beauty and skincare tools, you’re probably doing more harm than good. Here we break down exactly when you should replace your tool kit from makeup sponges to hair brushes and even razors. Makeup brushes Getty Images Some brushes last longer than others but all should be washed weekly. This keeps them hygienic and prevents product residue from drying them out. When it comes to replacing them, look for signs of fraying, malting and matting. Your brushes will naturally get firmer with use but they should remain largely smooth and flexible so that you can blend and buff easily. Makeup sponges Getty Images Sponges should also be cleaned weekly (using a balm, gel or gentle shampoo) but need to be replaced every three months. Products like beauty blenders are so absorbent that even with cleaning, gunk and bacteria will build up overtime and can end up on your face. This can lead to breakouts as well as uneven product application which is why you have to be strict about culling. Cleansing device heads Clarisonic Cleansing device heads tend to be made from two different materials: brush and silicone. Clarisonic, the device with a cult following, has a brush and they recommend replacing it every three months if you use it daily. This is generally a good rule to follow for any brush model. When it comes to silicone heads, most people think they don’t have to be replaced because they’re hardy and can be scrubbed clean. However, if you use silicone based makeup with a silicone cleansing device, the bristles will be damaged because silicone actually degrades silicone. The best option is to get a model with a detachable silicone head, like BeGlow, and replace it once a year. Hairbrushes Getty Images When it comes to hairbrushes, it’s really about wear and tear. Make sure you’re regularly cleaning it and removing excess hair but, unless it breaks, you’re good to hold onto it. Razors Getty Images There’s also no hard and fast rule for razor replacement. It really depends how much you use it and how thick your hair is. If it dulls, begins to snag the skin or goes blunt, it’s time to get a new one.
