There was the Friends reunion, the Sex And The City reboot and the rumoured return of Desperate Housewives, too. As for the ‘big’ screen, brace yourselves, because there’s now also going to be a Chicken Run 2. How egg-citing! The original animated film first came out in 2000 and became the highest grossing stop-motion animation film of all time – an achievement it still holds 22 years later. Rex Features The production team and studio behind Chicken Run said they’ve been waiting for ‘the right story and the right partner’ to create a second film for a long time. In fact, Netflix first confirmed the sequel would be happening in 2020, with production ‘expected to begin’ in 2021. So now that we have confirmation the new movie is well on its way, this is everything we know about the Chicken Run 2 so far… What’ s the plot To start with, the title is brilliant. Netflix revealed the second film will be called Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Yes, really. In the announcement, the streaming giant shared a still from the film, showing lead chickens Ginger and Rocky looking panicked at a chicken leg popping out of an egg. The caption reads: ‘DAWN OF THE NUGGET revisits your favourite chickens Ginger and Rocky, plus a whole-coop of new friends.’ View this post on Instagram A post shared by Netflix UK & Ireland (@netflixuk) The original film follows a flock of chickens seeking freedom from a farm owned by Mr and Mrs. Tweedy, who planned to turn them into chicken and gravy pies. The chickens manage to escape, so we expect the sequel to pick up on their newfound lives. It will see the arrival of Ginger and Rocky’s daughter, Molly, who begins to outgrow their home as she grows up. Who is starring in Chicken Run 2 Thandie Newton and Zachary Levi will be voicing Ginger and Rocky this time around. Game of Thrones actress Bella Ramsey will be voicing Molly, their baby chick, who is described as ‘a true chick-off-the-old-block’. Some of the original cast will also return to reprise their roles from the first film, including Imelda Staunton as Bunty, Jane Horrocks as Babs, and Lyn Ferguson as Mac. Rex Features Joining the chicken family are characters Nick, who will be voiced by comedian Romesh Ranganathan, Frizzle (voiced by Josie Sedgwick-Davies), Fowler (voiced by Harry Potter‘s David Bradley), Fetcher (voiced by Daniel Mays), and Dr. Fry (voiced by Nick Mohammed). When Romesh Ranganathan shared the news, he certainly impressed his followers and celebrity friends. Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer commented: ‘I.am.so.jealous’. ‘Ok that’s cool af,’ wrote singer Becky Hill. The sequel is set to be directed by Sam Fell, the man behind other animated favourites like Flushed Away and ParaNorman. He said: ‘I tell you it will be fun and games seeing these chickens back in action. All the gadgets, the kit, we’re kind of moving towards an almost-tribute to Mission Impossible with elements of heist and how they’re going to pull off this amazing break-in.’ When and where can I watch it Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will land on Netflix in 2023.
